DAY 1: Tuesday 21 November 2023
St Helens, Tasmania
The workshop departs from either Launceston
city at 10.30am or Launceston airport at 11.00am.
Today we travel to St Helens, the largest town on
the northeast coast of Tasmania, on Georges Bay.
St Helen’s is the gateway to the world famous, Bay
of Fires. Life in St Helens is all about the ocean. The
beaches, bays and estuaries here are perfect for
painting. This evening we will have welcome drinks
followed by an included dinner.
DAY 2: Wednesday 22 November 2023
St Helens, Tasmania
This morning David will commence with a
demonstration and then assist workshop members
individually with their work in the beautiful town of
St Helens.
DAY 3: Thursday 23 November 2023
St Helens, Tasmania
Today we travel to the Bay of Fires for a day of
painting. The Bay of Fires is famous for its crystalclear
waters, white sandy beaches and orange
lichen-covered granite boulders and is one of
Tasmania’s most popular conservation reserves. The
Bay of Fires extends along the coast from Binalong
Bay in the south to Eddystone Point in the north.
Its name refers to the Aboriginal fires spotted by
Captain Tobias Furneaux when he sailed past in 1773,
but it could also apply to the brilliant orange lichen
that grows on the granite boulders lining the bay.
DAY 4: Friday 24 November 2023
St Helens, Tasmania
Today we travel to Scamander and the surrounding
areas. Scamander is a small town at the mouth of the
Scamander River. David will find a great subject for
the days painting session.
DAY 5: Saturday 25 November 2023
St Helens, Tasmania
This morning we head south to Bicheno for a full day
of painting. Bicheno is a picturesque town situated
on the east coast of Tasmania, it began life as a
sealing and whaling town and then transitioned to
a coal mining port (shipping coal mined inland at
Fingal), but today crayfishing is the largest industry.
This evening there will be an included dinner.
DAY 6: Sunday 26 November 2023
Hobart, Tasmania
After breakfast, we will travel by coach to Freycinet
National Park. Freycinet National park is a place of
rare beauty with its white beaches and bright blue
waters overlooked by the pink granite mountains of
The Hazards. There is a wide variety of vegetation
including wetland, coastal dunes, dry eucalypt forest and orchids that bloom all year round. David will
perform a demonstration and then it will be your
turn to paint while David assists tour members with
their painting. This afternoon we will continue our
journey to Hobart.
DAY 7: Monday 27 November 2023
Hobart, Tasmania
Today we will enjoy a full day of painting in beautiful
Hobart with David Taylor. The group will paint the
19th century waterfront warehouses for which the
city is famous. The warehouses were once busy with
whalers, soldiers, petty bureaucrats and opportunist
businessmen, now they house cafes, restaurants and
studios and bustle with shoppers and visitors. In the
afternoon, we will enjoy a valuable critique session.
DAY 8: Tuesday 28 November 2023
Hobart, Tasmania
This morning we will travel to Richmond for a day
of painting. Richmond is a beautiful old town with
Georgian cottages of mellow sandstone standing
in pretty cottage gardens. Ducks on the Coal River
swim to and fro under Australia’s oldest bridge, built
by convict labour between 1823/25. In late 2005,
the Bridge was recognised as one of Australia’s
outstanding historic places and added to the
National Heritage List. David will demonstrate how to capture the beauty of this picturesque area and
assist workshop members with their painting. In the
afternoon, we will visit the MONA gallery.
DAY 9: Wednesday 29 November 2023
Hobart, Tasmania
This morning we travel south to the coastal towns of
Kettering, Cygnet and Huonville, located in the Huon
Valley for a full day of painting and sightseeing.
DAY 10: Thursday 30 November 2023
Hobart, Tasmania
Today we travel to the riverside township of
Franklin for a full day of painting. There is a lot of
old-fashioned Tasmanian charm in Franklin, from
the quaint historic buildings and streetscape to the
pretty wooden boats floating on the Huon River.
Located in the ultra-scenic Huon Valley, Franklin is
the oldest township in the region and sits quietly on
the western side of the beautiful Huon River.
DAY 11: Friday 1 December 2023
Hobart, Tasmania
Today we will travel to Port Arthur for a full day of
sightseeing and sketching. Between 1830 and 1877
about 12,500 transported convicts were imprisoned
at Port Arthur, on the shores of a beautiful bay and
set against the tranquil hills and forest of the Tasman
Peninsula. Many of the sandstone prison buildings
remain and have been preserved. On arrival, we will
have a self-guided tour of the prison giving you an
impression of what life might have been like in the
1800s for the convicts, soldiers and civilians. After
lunch, there will be time for sketching. We will return
to Hobart in the afternoon.
DAY 12: Saturday 2 December 2023
Hobart, Tasmania
This morning David will find a great painting location
in Hobart and complete a demonstration followed
by assisting individual workshop members with their
painting. Hobart’s gracious homes and buildings,
colonial cottages, heritage parks and gardens will
provide plenty of subjects to paint during the day.
This afternoon there will be a final critique sessions
followed by included farewell drinks and dinner.
DAY 13: Sunday 3 December 2023

“It was so well organized. We got to see all the best places, but without feeling we were being herded around like cattle, like you do on some tours. There was plenty of time to paint, and the instructor told me more about how to improve my painting style in weeks than I have learned all year back home. I really did get individual attention.”
“I particularly enjoyed meeting people with similar interests and having a working reason for being in a location.”
