DAY 1 Tuesday 5 September, 2023
Vence, France
Workshop members will be met at Nice Airport at
2.00pm (please ensure you allow sufficient time
to collect your luggage from your flight, prior to
the transfer time). Our private coach will transfer
workshop members to their first base in Vence. The
small town of Vence is located some 25 kms to the
north of Nice. The medieval walled cite de Vence
was built on a rocky ledge, surrounded by its original
fortifications and accessed by one of five arched
gateways. A short orientation tour will take place
before welcome drinks and included dinner.
DAY 2 Wednesday 6 September, 2023
Vence
Today we travel to Tourettes-sur-Loup, an authentic
artisan’s village. It is also market day, an experience
not to be missed for visitors to France. Whether
it is medieval buildings or intimate courtyards,
Tourettes-sur-Loup will offer many great subjects
for today’s painting.
DAY 3 Thursday 7 September, 2023
Vence
Today, we travel a short distance to beautiful Saint
Paul de Vence, which has attracted many noted
artists, including Chagall, who spent the latter
part of his life on the French Riviera. He now rests in the small cemetery in Saint Paul, overlooking
the Mediterranean Sea. In the afternoon, Annee
will find great subjects to paint and assist tour
members individually.
DAY 4 Friday 8 September, 2023
Vence
This morning, we will visit the smallest cathedral
in France, la Cathedrale Notre Dame de la Nativite
de Vence, built in the 11th century in both a Gothic
and Baroque Romanesque style. In the baptistery,
Chagall’s mosaic of Moses can be found. This will
be followed by a day of painting within the walled
city of Vence.
DAY 5 Saturday 9 September, 2023
Vence
Our painting session today will be in Haut-de-
Cagnes a medieval village, perched above the
seaside town of Cagnes-sur-Mer. Annee will
find a great painting location and complete a
demonstration. Following this, Annee will assist
individual members with their paintings. In the
afternoon, we will travel to nearby Cagnes-sur-Mer,
to visit Renoir’s Museum. The museum’s collection
of paintings, sculptures, artist’s studio and furniture
constitute the testimony of Renoir’s last twelve years
of his life, spent here. This residence sits amongst
extensive beautiful gardens planted with century old
olive trees, which will make for yet more interesting
sketching material.
DAY 6 Sunday 10 September, 2023
Vence
Our final day of painting in Vence. After breakfast,
Annee will conduct a demonstration and then
spend time moving amongst the group members,
offering individual assistance. In the afternoon we
will visit Chapelle Matisse. It was considered by
Matisse himself as his masterpiece. He designed and
built it in its entirety as a thank you gesture to the
Dominican sisters who nursed him through a critical
illness. Tonight we will have an included dinner.
DAY 7 Monday 11 September, 2023
Villefranche sur Mer, France
This morning we will leave Vence and travel south
to Hotel Versailles, located in Villefranche sur Mer,
a beautiful fishing port and holiday resort. After
settling in we will enjoy an orientation tour in
the old precinct of Villefranche followed by an
opportunity to sketch and paint. Annee will paint a
demonstration and offer individual assistance. This
evening we will enjoy an included dinner.
DAY 8 Tuesday 12 September, 2023
Villefranche sur Mer
A full day of painting, relaxation and enjoyment
in spectacular Villefranche sur Mer under Annee’s
helpful eye. The spectacular views from the hotels
terrace will make inspiring subjects.
DAY 9 Wednesday 13 September, 2023
Villefranche sur Mer
Today, we will travel to Antibes by private coach
where we will have a historical walking tour of the
old town with a local guide The historical old town
(Vieil Antibes) within the ramparts has retained
much of its original character with quaint cobbled
streets, a Provençal market and lots of restaurants,
street cafes and bars. We will also visit the Picasso
Museum. It is unique because it is housed in the
Old Grimaldi Castle. Picasso had a studio there back
in 1946 and in less than two months; he created 44
drawings and 23 paintings. Upon returning to Paris,
he left them in Antibes and later donated them to
the museum. Thereafter, they had enough of his
works in order to rename the museum “Picasso
Museum“ in 1966 and it was the first one in the world
specifically dedicated to him whilst he was still alive.
There will be a painting session in the afternoon.
DAY 10 Thursday 14 September, 2023
Villefranche sur Mer
Today, workshop members will travel to Eze, a
charming hilltop village, the highest on the Côte
d’Azur. Its beautiful cobblestone streets, hot-pink
bougainvillea and amazing views will make great
subjects for a day’s painting.
DAY 11 Friday 15 September, 2023
Villefranche sur Mer
Today we will travel to Nice by coach for a morning
sightseeing tour with a local guide. Here we shall
commence by exploring the town of Nice with
its famous pebble beach and the Promenade des
Anglais, followed by the old town, with its colourful
flower market, narrow streets, ornate churches and
tall Italianate ochre buildings. We will travel to Cimiez
to the nearby Franciscan Monastery where Matisse is
buried and Annee will commence the day’s painting program with a demonstration in the beautiful
monastery garden.
DAY 12 Saturday 16 September, 2023
Villefranche sur Mer
On our final day in beautiful Villefranche sur Mer,
we will take the opportunity to complete our
unfinished paintings or maybe go shopping.
Tonight, we will have an included farewell drinks
party and dinner to celebrate our time on the
French Riviera. It will be an ideal occasion to talk
about our great time in France, the stimulating
painting led by Annee and our new friendships.

“It was so well organized. We got to see all the best places, but without feeling we were being herded around like cattle, like you do on some tours. There was plenty of time to paint, and the instructor told me more about how to improve my painting style in weeks than I have learned all year back home. I really did get individual attention.”
“I particularly enjoyed meeting people with similar interests and having a working reason for being in a location.”
