WORKSHOP
Day 1: TUESDAY NOVEMBER 25, 2008 Hobart
Workshop members will be picked up from Hobart Airport and transferred to a centrally located hotel in Hobart, our base for the next four nights. Hobart lies in the south-east of the state, near the mouth of the Derwent River at the foot of Mount Wellington. The 19th century waterfront warehouses for which the city is famous once bustled with whalers, soldiers, petty bureaucrats and opportunist businessmen. Now they house cafes, restaurants and studios and bustle with shoppers and visitors. Hobart's gracious homes and buildings, colonial cottages and warehouses, heritage parks and gardens will provide plenty of subjects to paint during our stay in Tasmania's capital. Welcome drinks followed by an included dinner will be held for workshop members to get to know each other and for Charles and Robert to outline their plans for the workshop.
Day 2: WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 26, 2008 Hobart
This morning Charles and Robert will find a great painting location in Hobart and complete a demonstration. Following this, Charles and Robert will assist individual workshop members with their painting. A constructive critique session will be held late afternoon.
DAY 3: THURSDAY NOVEMBER 27, 2008 Hobart
After breakfast we will travel to Port Arthur for a full day of sightseeing and painting. Between 1830 and 1877 about 12,500 transported convicts were imprisoned at Port Arthur, on the shores of a beautiful bay and set against the tranquil hills and forest of the Tasman Peninsula. Many of the sandstone prison buildings remain and have been preserved. On arrival we will have a tour of the prison giving you an impression of what life might have been like in the 1800s for the convicts, soldiers and civilians.
After lunch Charles and Robert will paint a demonstration in a good location. We will return to Hobart in the afternoon.
DAY 4: FRIDAY NOVEMBER 28, 2008 Hobart
This morning we will travel to Richmond for a day of painting. Richmond is a beautiful old town with Georgian cottages of mellow sandstone standing in pretty cottage gardens. Ducks on the Coal River swim to and fro under Australia's oldest bridge, built by convict labour between 1823-25. In late 2005, the Bridge was recognised as one of Australia's outstanding historic places and added to the National Heritage List. Charles and Robert will demonstrate how to capture the beauty of this picturesque area and assist workshop members with their painting.
DAY 5: SATURDAY NOVEMBER 29, 2008 Freycinet
After breakfast we will depart by coach to Freycinet National Park, which will be our base for the next four nights. Freycinet National Park is a place of rare beauty with its white beaches and bright blue waters overlooked by the pink granite mountains of The Hazards. There is a wide variety of vegetation including wetland, coastal dunes, dry eucalypt forest and orchids that bloom all year round. Close to Freycinet is the perfect half-moon of Wineglass Bay, ranked as one of the world's best beaches.
DAY 6: SUNDAY NOVEMBER 30, 2008 Freycinet
Today we will have a full day of painting in Freycinet National Park with Charles and Robert. They will perform a demonstration and then it will be your turn to paint while Charles and Robert assist tour members with their painting. A critique session will be held in the afternoon.
DAY 7: MONDAY DECEMBER 1, 2008 Freycinet
A full day of painting in Freycinet National Park. Helpful assistance will be provided to individual workshop members.
DAY 8: TUESDAY DECEMBER 2, 2008 Launceston
This morning we will travel by coach to Clarendon Homestead for a day of sketching. Clarendon Homestead is one of the great Georgian Regency houses of Australia and has large formal gardens and beautiful parklands. There will be an opportunity to visit the fascinating National Trust mansion. In the afternoon we will travel onto Launceston, which will be our base for the next three nights. Launceston is Tasmania's second largest city and sits at the junction of the North and South Esk Rivers. It's magnificent scenery and colourful Victorian and Edwardian homes that line the hillsides along the riverbanks will provide delightful painting opportunities for workshop members.
DAY 9: WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 3, 2008 Launceston
Today Charles and Robert will lead tour members to a special location in Launceston for a day of painting. A constructive critique session will be held in the afternoon.
DAY 10: THURSDAY DECEMBER 4, 2008 Launceston
This morning we will travel by coach to Deloraine for a day of painting. Deloraine is a historic town, surrounded by classic 'English-style' countryside of rolling green hills, hedgerows, and working farms, and sits at the foothills of the famous Great Western Tiers. Deloraine is now established as a major arts and craft centre, hosting the Tasmanian Craft Fair in November each year.
DAY 11: FRIDAY DECEMBER 5, 2008 Launceston
After breakfast, Charles and Robert will lead the final day of painting in Launceston. They will demonstrate and then spend time moving amongst the group members offering individual assistance. A final critique session will be held before an included dinner to celebrate the success of the workshop.
DAY 12: SATURDAY DECEMBER 6, 2008 Departure
Time to say farewell. After breakfast, we will travel by coach to Launceston airport and the workshop will conclude.
