Day 1: Thursday 5 October, 2017
Workshop members will be met at Hanoi International airport at 1.00pm and transferred to the workshop hotel, located in an oasis of quiet elegance. Hanoi is without doubt one of Asia’s most beautiful cities, with its Chinese architecture, majestic colonial buildings and wide tree lined boulevards. The French style architecture, narrow alleyways packed with bicycles and merchants, beautiful lakes, a magnificent Opera House and delightful low rise buildings produce a unique ambience. Our hotel, is the Silk Path Hotel and is situated on the edge of the famous Old Quarter. This evening the group will come together for welcome drinks and John will outline his plans for the workshop. There will be an included dinner tonight. (Pre tour accommodation for passengers wanting to arrive earlier can be arranged through Travelrite along with a private transfer).
Day 2: Friday 6 October, 2017
This morning we will have a sightseeing tour of Hanoi with a local guide. We will see the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex followed by a ride on a cyclo through the Old Quarter. The city has had an amazing history and witnessed numerous incursions from China, seen a host of Vietnamese emperors come and go, and at one time even lost its status as the nation’s capital. With the coming of the French at the end of the 19th century, the city gained a new lease of life. This European influence can still be seen in the elegant colonial buildings that line the broad tree-lined boulevards of much of the city. After lunch there will be time for painting in one of the nearby back streets.
Day 3: Saturday 7 October, 2017
This morning we will travel the 350km drive to Sapa, by private coach. En route we will stop for an included lunch. The northwest market town of Sapa is incredibly picturesque, colourful and charming. Sapa is famous for both its fine, rugged scenery and also its rich cultural diversity. Sapa and its surrounding region is host to many hill tribes, as well as rice terraces, lush vegetation, and Fansipan, the highest peak in Vietnam. Tonight we will have an included dinner.
Day 4: Sunday 8 October, 2017
Today we travel to Muong Hoa Valley for a full day of painting. Muong Hoa is one of the most famous destinations for breathtaking scenery. From the mountain range covered by endless forest, rain water follows dozens of streams downhill to the floor forming the Muong Hoa valley. We will enjoy an easy walk downhill and along Muong Hoa River, through terraced fields passing some hamlets of the H’Mong people, watching locals at work in the village weaving and dyeing cloth. We will have an included Vietnamese lunch today.
Day 5: Monday 9 October, 2017
Today you will have the opportunity to paint in Sapa. John will paint a demonstration and then assist workshop members with individual guidance.
Day 6: Tuesday 10 October, 2017
Today we travel to Ta Phin Village, which has a rich culture that has not been damaged by modern life. On the walk around Ta Phin Village, you will see simple houses with girls sitting sewing products by hand. Bright smiles and the laughter of children will also make an unforgettable memory. We will enjoy an included Vietnamese lunch today.
Day 7: Wednesday 11 October, 2017
This morning we will be travel to Hanoi airport to board our flight to Danang. From the airport we travel to the UNESCO World Heritage ancient town of Hoi An. The large community of foreign merchants living in Hoi An between the 16th and 18th centuries resulted in a unique display of architecture, combining Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese cultures. Hoi An has a distinct Chinese atmosphere with low, tile-roofed houses and narrow streets, the original structure of some of these streets still remain intact. All the houses were made of rare wood, decorated with lacquered boards and panels engraved with Chinese characters. Our hotel for the next six nights is the Anantara Resort Hoi An. The hotel is located along the scenic Thu Bon River, The Anantara resort Hoi An is a short stroll from the colourful and bustling Ancient Town. Tonight we will have an included dinner.
Day 8: Thursday 12 October, 2017
This morning we have a walking tour of Hoi An with a local guide through the narrow winding streets of the Ancient Quarter. We will visit Chua Ong Pagoda, Chinese Assembly Halls, the 200 years old Tam Ky ancestral house and the Japanese Bridge. This afternoon John will lead the group to a suitable painting location, paint a demonstration and then move around the group and assist workshop members individually. During our visit to Hoi An you may like to visit one of the many tailors. Hoi An is well known for its custom clothing trade. A critique session will be held in the afternoon.
Day 9: Friday 13 October, 2017
This morning we will take a cooking class at the Red Bridge Cooking School. We will visit Hoi An’s colorful market, and experience the amazing sights, sounds and aromas of this busy market. We board the Red Bridge boat for a leisurely cruise along the Hoi An River to the Red Bridge Cooking School. On arrival, we explore the cooking school’s herb garden, before learning about some of Hoi An’s and Vietnam’s well-known dishes. In the afternoon there will be a painting session in the Red Bridge cooking school gardens.
Day 10: Satuday 14 October, 2017
This morning John will choose a wonderful painting location, paint a demonstration and then assist workshop members with their individual artwork.
Day 11: Sunday 15 October, 2017
This morning we will travel to the countryside for a painting session. You will have an opportunity to see the famous China beach, which is more than 20 miles long. John will choose a great painting subject in the countryside and paint a demonstration. We will return to the hotel early afternoon.
Day 12: Monday 16 October, 2017
Our final day of painting in Hoi An with John. In the afternoon we will enjoy a final critique session followed by farewell drinks and an included dinner to celebrate our time in Vietnam.
Day 13: Tuesday 17 October, 2017
